Having served in Vietnam and the Gulf war the Aardvark retired in 1996. The Royal Australian Air Force continued to use the aircraft up until 2010.

Early in its service the aircraft broke a world speed record of 1525 mph, piloted by Major Joseph W. Rogers. Its main role was as an air superiority fighter, seeing service in Alaska, Iceland, Germany and South Korea. The Delta Dart was more commonly known as the 'Six'.
