The Tupolev Tu-95's or Bear's were often confronted by armed RAF fighters firing passive homing missiles. GCI in now supported with Airborne Early Warning and Control systems. These AEW aircraft patrol our UK skies as well as in overseas conflicts. The RAF Typhoon F2 now operates out of Lossiemouth and Coningsby still in the QRA - 'Bear Hunting' role.
