The La Fayette Escadrille N124 was formed in 1916 during the First World War. Part of the Aéronautique Militaire, the Squadron was made up mostly of American volunteer pilots, the name coming from the Marquis de Lafayette. The Escadrille adopted the bust of Chief Sitting Bull as its emblem. Famous pilots from the First War include Kiffin Rockwell, Victor Chapman and Norman Prince. In 1907 Glenn Curtiss became a member of the Aerial Experiment Association founded by Dr Alexander Graham Bell. The purpose of the association was to establish aeronautical research and development. Glenn Curtis then formed the Herring-Curtiss Company with Augustus Herring which was then renamed the Curtiss Aeroplane Company in 1910 based in Hammondsport, New York. Curtiss merged with the Curtiss Motor Company in 1916 and established itself in Buffalo, New York. The Curtiss Aeroplane Company ended in 1929 with the merger of the Wright Corporation.

The Sopwith Aviation Company was formed in 1912 by Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith. Tommy was a wealthy sportsman interested in aviation, yachting and motor racing. The business started at Brooklands, moved to Canbury Park Road then settled in Kingston. After World War I Sopwith was liquidated and Tommy Sopwith formed HG Hawker Engineering with Harry Hawker, Fred Sigrist and Bill Eyre. The Blackbird is the creation of the Lockheed 'Skunk Works' division. A high altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft, the SR-71 was truly untouchable. Any threats were simply outrun and evaded, 12 were lost to accidents and none to enemy action. The aircraft entered service in 1966 and was finally retired by NASA in 1999.
