Eric Lock joined the RAF in 1939, completed his training and joined No.41 Squadron at the very start of the Battle of Britain. He became Britain's highest scoring fighter pilot, but in 1941 was sadly downed by ground fire over France and his body was never recovered. This design celebrates Lock as a Fighter Ace with 26 destroyed to his name, but he was part of the RAF that was served by many men and women who were all heroes.

In 1907 Glenn Curtiss became a member of the Aerial Experiment Association founded by Dr Alexander Graham Bell. The purpose of the association was to establish aeronautical research and development. Glenn Curtis then formed the Herring-Curtiss Company with Augustus Herring which was then renamed the Curtiss Aeroplane Company in 1910 based in Hammondsport, New York. Curtiss merged with the Curtiss Motor Company in 1916 and established itself in Buffalo, New York. The Curtiss Aeroplane Company ended in 1929 with the merger of the Wright Corporation.

The RAF operates the Chinook HC2/A variant and performed(s) an important role in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan. The nickname 'WOKKA' comes from the distinctive sound made by the 60ft diameter twin rotors chopping the air.

Using GCI (Ground Controlled Interception) Phantoms and Lightnings were scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft 'wandering' into UK airspace. The Tupolev Tu-95's or Bear's were often confronted by armed RAF fighters firing passive homing missiles. GCI in now supported with Airborne Early Warning and Control systems. These AEW aircraft patrol our UK skies as well as in overseas conflicts. The RAF Typhoon F2 now operates out of Lossiemouth and Coningsby still in the QRA - 'Bear Hunting' role.

Short S.25 Sunderland Built by Short Brothers, the Sunderland was used by the RAF as a flying boat patrol bomber. The S.25 first flew in 1937 and entered service in 1938. The aircraft was operated by the RNZAF right up to 1967.

Designed by Sir Sydney Camm, the Hurricane first flew in 1935. It was used during the Battle of France, Operation Dynamo and the Battle of Britain where it became known as the 'workhorse' of the RAF. As a steady and robust gun platform it was tasked to attack the invading German bombers with great effectiveness. The Hurricane continued to be produced in many variants right through to the end of the war.

Louis Blériot, the first man to fly across the English Channel Louis Blériot was a French-born inventor and engineer who had invented and manufactured headlamps for motor cars. Profits from his business were invested in building aeroplanes and Blériot was the first to develop the stick and rudder system of controlling an aircraft. In 1909 he entered his monoplane into the Daily Mail Prize of flying across the English Channel. At sunrise of July 25th he took off from Les Baraques and made it to Dover in just over 23 minutes, making aviation history. This design has been given a deliberate aged and 'weathered' appearance.
